Correspondence files, Class 5 (British Migrants)

Correspondence files, Class 5 (British Migrants) contains records created by the Department of Immigration and the Department of the Interior, dating from 1920 to 1957. It is held by the National Archives of Australia. This series contains correspondence files relating to the migration of British subjects to Australia, including the migration of children through Child Migration schemes.

Access Conditions

The majority of items in this series are open, and many have been digitised and are available online.

Open access records can be ordered from NAA by any member of the public either for viewing in-person (a free service) or as an online copy (requires payment). Individuals requesting records will need to first create a user login for record search, and then request a copy via the online catalogue entry for that item.

Some items in this Series are open with exception, meaning that portions of the files are closed to protect personal privacy. The open portions of these files can be ordered in the same way as fully open records. To access information in the closed portions of these files individuals will need to contact the NAA directly providing details of the records in question. The records will be reviewed, and appropriate access determined.

This series contains some files of correspondence between the Department of Immigration and organisations or Homes that participated in child migration schemes, including the Big Brother Movement, Dr Barnardos, The Fairbridge Society, The Catholic Episcopal Migration & Welfare Association, Northcote Farm School, and Scheyville Training Farm.
