The Christies Beach Family Home opened in Christies Beach in the mid to late 1970s. Run by the government, Family Homes provided short term accommodation for children within their own community. In 1980, the Home was converted into a Youth Support Unit, an outreach service for young people.
The Christies Beach Family Home opened at Christies Beach in the mid to late 1970s. Family Homes were established by the Department for Community Welfare in the 1970s and 1980s in outer metropolitan and country areas. They provided short term accommodation for children within their own community. They were often used for emergency and short-term care for children during a family crisis or while other placement options were being explored. Family Homes were managed by approved foster carers rather than by departmental officers. They housed smaller number of children in family-style care.
In 1980, the Home was replaced by the Seaford Youth Support Unit, an outreach service for young people.
