Child Information and Departmental Administration records is an archival collection held by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing. It contains records from the following Victorian institutions: Turana, Baltara Reception Centre, Langi Kal Kal and Malmsbury Youth Training Centres, Melbourne Youth Justice Centre.

Access Conditions

Restricted Access – Records containing personal or private information about children are closed to public access for a period of 99 years. Care Leavers (and their families) can apply for access to records via the Care Leaver Records Service.

Note: Before the 1980s there appeared to be a policy that when a child went from Turana or Baltara to a privately run Home (e.g. St Vincent’s or St Augustine’s), their Baltara file was transferred to the new agency. When boys were transferred from Baltara and Turana to a government-run boys’ Home, their reception and classification files from Baltara or Turana were transferred with them to the new institution. These Turana or Baltara files were incorporated into the filing system at the new Homes including Ashendene and Hillside.
