Carinya Girls' Hostel

Details

Carinya Girls’ Hostel was established by the Anglican Home Mission Society at Hurstville on 29th February 1976. It was a hostel for up to eight girls, aged 14 to 16 years old, who had been before the Courts and released on probation. It was intended to be an alternative to the larger more institutional youth training centres.

Carinya was closed in October 1977, only eighteen months after its opening. In articles published in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1978, the Anglican Home Mission Society stated that the closure was primarily due to financial issues, as the society was not receiving financial support from the State Government to run the home. Other issues identified that had led to the closure of the hostel were issues with the building itself, such as a lack of privacy for both the girls and staff living there, an inability of the staff to adequately manage the discipline and behaviour of the girls, and very high staff turnover. A total of 34 girls had been admitted to Carinya in the short time it was open, many of whom stayed at the hostel for only a few days.
