Cann Home was built in 1924 as an addition to the Methodist Children’s Homes at Magill, joining Roberts Home and Greenslade Home. Cann Home provided accommodation for older boys, while Greenslade housed girls, and Roberts Home was used for younger boys. When it was first built, Cann Home was designed to cater for 30-35 boys. In 1957 Cann Home was altered to create two independent living units named Cann and I’Anson Cottages.
Cann Home was built in November 1924 as an addition to the Methodist Children’s Homes at Penfold Road, Magill. It joined two other buildings, Roberts Home and Greenslade Home. Greenslade Home provided accommodation for girls. The new Cann Home was created to cater for older boys and this allowed Roberts Home to be used specifically for younger boys.
A newspaper article printed just prior to the opening of the Cann Home in 1924 described it as follows:
The Home is fitted with every convenience. The rooms are large and lofty, and there are wide sleeping-out verandahs. A carpenter’s shop has been built, and the boys will be taught carpentering, boot repairing, and other necessary things.
When it was first built, Cann Home was designed to cater for 30-35 boys.
In 1928 the matron of Cann Home was Miss Lang, the matron of Roberts Home was Miss Maddeford and the Matron of Greenslade Home was Miss Roper.
In 1957 Cann Home was altered to create two independent living units named Cann Cottage and I’Anson Cottage. This renovation allowed two family groups to live independently under one roof.
