Ben White House opened in February 1980 at Cleveland and in October of that year moved to East Brisbane. It was a family group home operated by Save the Children Fund, Queensland. In early 1985 it moved to Morningside. In December 1985 it became a specialist residential care program and in April 1991 it moved to Hawthorne and closed in May 1991.
In the beginning, Ben White House was staffed by one paid ‘house parent’ as well as volunteers. Eventually the model progressed to a family group home where residents were supported by youth workers.
Ben White ultimately evolved into a Home known as Aurala. Aurala was based on the ‘youth worker model’ of alternative care, according to a 2012 email from Save the Children.
