The Ballarat Town and City Mission was founded in 1867. The Ballarat Town and City Mission ran a number of Homes for women and children, including, from around 1921 until 1973, the Alexandra Babies’ Home.
The organisation was initially known as the Ballarat Town Mission, as well as the Open Air Mission. In 1913, it was renamed the Ballarat Town and City Mission (Ballarat Star, 15 July 1913).
In 1921, the Ballarat Town and City Mission took over the management of the Ballarat Female Refuge. The Mission moved all of the women and children in its care to Scotts Parade, Ballarat East. At its annual meeting in July 1922, the City Mission announced that the site was now named the Ballarat Female Rescue and Alexandra Homes (Ballarat Star, 20 July 1922). The Mission ran the Ballarat Rescue Home for women in the former Female Refuge building until it closed in 1941.
The Alexandra Babies’ Home closed in November 1973, and the Ballarat Town and City Mission also wound up around this time.
