Mentally Retarded Person’s Association Hostel

The Mentally Retarded Person’s Association Hostel opened in Darwin in 1968. Run by the Mentally Retarded Person’s Association it provided accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities. The Association also ran a pre-school and provided supported employment and training. The Mentally Retarded Persons Association Hostel closed in 1974.

Carpentaria Disability Services

Carpentaria Disabilty Services, also known as Carpentaria Community Services, was the new name given to the Harry Giese Centre around 1996. It provided 24 hour supported living services and respite care for people with disabilities including children. It was still operating in 2018.

The Harry Giese Centre

The Harry Giese Centre in Darwin opened in 1977. It was run by the Northern Territory Spastics Association (Inc), formerly the Darwin and Districts Spastics Paralysis Association, and provided assessment, treatment and residential care for people with disabilities including children. Diocese of the Northern Territory

The Diocese of Northern Territory was established by the Anglican Church of Australia in 1968. It replaced the Diocese of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory. It is responsible for the ministry of the Anglican Church across the whole of the Northern Territory.

Yirara College

Yirara College was established in Alice Springs in 1973 as a government secondary residential college. It accommodated Aboriginal students from remote areas who were studying at the College. In 1991 control of the College was taken over by the Finke River Mission of the Lutheran Church of Australia.

Anglican Diocese of Carpentaria

The Anglican Diocese of Carpentaria was established in 1900 with the aim to spread the work of the Anglican Church into Northern Australia. Leslie House

Leslie House was opened by Anglicare NT in Alice Springs in 2010 to provide residential care for young people aged 8 – 17 years waiting to be placed in foster or kinship care. It was located in the former premises of Leslie Cottage which was refurbished during 2009 and renamed Leslie House.

Somerville Community Services Incorporated was the new name for Somerville Homes Incorporated from 1982. The organisation ran a number of residential care facilities in the Darwin area. Bunyip House opened in Darwin in 1981. Run by Somerville Homes and its successor Somerville Community Services, it provided residential care and treatment for children with severe disabilities. The Alice Springs Lutheran Archives is housed in the former Lutheran Church Building in Alice Springs. The Archives holds records relating to the history of the Lutheran Mission Block and Lutheran cottages on that site.
