Department of Premier and Cabinet, State of Tasmania

The Department of Premier and Cabinet replaced the Premier’s Department on 1 February 1985. It remained a central point for the business of the Tasmanian government but also took on a new role in policy analysis and advice. In 2013, it remains the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

The Premier’s and Chief Secretary’s Department replaced the Chief Secretary’s Department and Premier’s Office in 1955. Like its predecessor, it coordinated the administrative business of the Tasmanian government. In 1976, it became the Premier’s Department.

Between 1896 and 1901, the Neglected Children’s Department was a part of the Chief Secretary’s Department. Sherriff and Gaols Department, Colony of Tasmania

The Sheriff and Gaols Department, established in 1824, enforced Supreme Court judgements and managed the jury system. In this role, it oversaw local gaols, many of which housed children. In 1901, following Australian federation, Tasmania became a state and the state government took over the management of the Sheriff and Gaols Department.

Children’s Psychiatric Service Launceston

The Children’s Psychiatric Service Launceston, run by the Mental Health Services Commission, opened in about 1971. It had a multidisciplinary team that used a community and family orientated approach to working with children. Division of Mental Health

The Division of Mental Health, a part of the Health Services Department, formerly the Public Health Department, replaced the Division of Mental Hygiene in 1956. It was responsible for the Mental Deficiency Board as well as Lachlan Park and Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Hospitals. In 1963, the Division of Psychiatric Services replaced it.

Division of Mental Hygiene

The Division of Mental Hygiene was established in 1945 as part of a restructure of the Public Health Department. It had responsibility for the Mental Deficiency Board as well as Lachlan Park and Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Hospitals.

Tasmania Police, State of Tasmania

Tasmania Police replaced the Police Department in 2004. In 2013, it is part of the Department of Police and Emergency Management.
